Modern Farmhouse Teen Bedroom Reveal

When our kids enter their teens, they begin to develop a stronger sense of self and their bedroom becomes a reflection of this. I had the privilege of working with my sister to surprise my niece for her birthday with a simplified, organized and refreshed modern farmhouse bedroom.

This post is packed full of before and after pictures along with 4 simple tips on how to work with your teen to create a cozy, simplified and stylish space. My niece was overjoyed with the result: a beautiful modern farmhouse teen bedroom that reflected her style with simple systems to keep her space organized!

1. SIMPLIFY

Over the years, a lot of clutter can accumulate in your child’s bedroom. Crafts, trinkets, posters, photos, stuffed animals, special blankets, and toys are a few of the items that can take over a space! Before we could work on organizing and styling, my niece simplified the items in her space.

  • sort and touch each item
  • keep only the favourite, necessary and best quality items to make room for what really matters in your space
  • find a “keepsake box” to contain special childhood items and photos and store this box under the bed or in a closet

2. ORGANIZE

Once the items in this small farmhouse bedroom had been simplified, it was time to organize! The small crawl space contains an extensive Schleich horse collection along with a few special childhood toys and a keepsake bin. Sketch books, art supplies, and journals are stored neatly inside of the updated desk. My niece loves to draw and do her homework at her desk and she only needs to look out the window to be inspired!

There is a small bin of go-to supplies for homework sessions and a bin for makeup on the rustic barn wood shelves next to the desk as my niece also applies her make up in this space.

We were able to sell the large dresser and created a labeled bin system in the closet to store clothing neatly. There is also rolling storage under the bed for pyjamas, socks and undergarments.

  • create vision first: how does your teen want to use the space?
  • use bins to sort like items
  • label bins clearly to keep the space organized

3. REFRESH

I created a MOOD BOARD to create vision for the space. We used the board to guide us as we chose the textures, colours and materials that we would incorporate in the modern farmhouse teen bedroom.

We chose to paint the walls in this small farmhouse bedroom “white dove” by Benjamin Moore to brighten up the space and make it appear larger. My sister scored a deal on tongue and groove shiplap in the clearance section at Home Depot. We captured the farmhouse feel by adding shiplap on one wall and including black accents on the curtain rod, hardware, shelf brackets and stool.

My niece just happens to have parents who are both artists so we incorporated a lot of custom art in the space along with pictures of the family’s horses. My sister used her DIY skills to paint and add new hardware to the the existing desk.

We installed 2 small book ledges from IKEA next to the magical reading nook! The family already owned the wicker chair and hanging canopy so a new black and white horse cushion, plaid throw, fuzzy white mat and twinkle lights set the tone for cozying up with a good book!

We asked Angela, from Urban Habitat to create this custom artwork with my niece’s favourite verse to encourage her daily.

  • less is more when making decor choices
  • paint can transform walls and existing furniture
  • keep in mind that wall colour is harder to change than pillows, throws and artwork
  • frame your favourite photos and pictures to create a fun gallery wall, display some on book ledges or on a desk or night table

4. TRANSFORM

Teaching your teen to embrace some simple daily habits will ensure that their space continues to feel like a dreamy retreat.

  • encourage bed making every morning
  • keep a small basket for laundry and when its full throw the clothes into the washing machine
  • make sure to include a cute trash basket to ensure garbage stays contained

The Reveal

Throughout the process, we involved my niece in much of the decision making as we wanted to capture her vision for the space. On the day of her birthday party we completed the bedroom refresh and invited her into the room to check out her new space. Her smile is worth more than a thousand words!

We were able to mix old with new, repurpose furniture and create the farmhouse vibe that my niece desired! It all began with editing the items in the space, then organizing them in a way that stayed true to the vision and finally adding in timeless decor elements to tie it all together!
