Home Bedroom Refresh: Step-By-Step Guide

In this ultimate home bedroom refresh guide for moms, I’m sharing 8 PRO tips you can use to finally prioritize creating your own personal sanctuary. Remember, a home bedroom refresh does not require a huge amount of time or financial commitment, just some intentional steps!

1. Assess the Current State of Your Bedroom

  • Take a Step Back: Before we begin, it is important to take a moment to notice how your bedroom currently feels—Is it restful? Cluttered? Disorganized?
  • Identify Priorities: Notice what you like about your space (you can always find something!) and then think about one or two priorities you would like to focus on in your home bedroom refresh. A few priorities could be comfort, sleep quality, space and relaxation.
  • Create a Vision: A powerful practice that will keep you inspired throughout the process of creating a home bedroom refresh is to imagine how you want your own personal sanctuary to feel once it’s complete. Close your eyes to imagine the space as it will be and keep this image in your mind, or even better, write a description of it and keep it somewhere you can easily refer back to whenever you need to remember why you are doing this in the first place.

2. Declutter: Start with the Basics

  • Tidy Up First: Clutter will naturally build up in a space that hasn’t been intentionally simplified, organized and refreshed. A quick way to tidy up is to do a “clean sweep” in your space. Grab a garbage bag and discard any obvious garbage, broken or ripped items, old receipts and papers that have been collected in piles or on the floor.
  • Set a Time Limit: I would suggest you schedule a few 20 minute to 1-hour decluttering sessions in your calendar this week. This practice will allow your brain to relax, knowing you have a plan to complete your home bedroom refresh. If you feel like you can keep going, add on another 20 minutes to your timer at a time.
  • Purge What You Don’t Need: The best thing you can do to create a relaxing oasis in your bedroom, is to simplify your belongings. Focus on one specific area (nightstands, closet, under the bed). First gather all of the items and sort them into categories right away. Then, edit each pile by deciding if each item is the best quality, useful or a favourite purchase. Release anything that no longer serves a purpose. Then, organize your keep items, grouped together in specific categories.

3. Revamp Your Bedding

  • Purchase New Bedding or Freshen Up Existing: You spend about ⅓ of your life sleeping, so if you are going to invest in one item, I would suggest you purchase comfortable bedding (pillows, duvet, sheets). You can also freshen up your current set by washing it and taking the time to make your bed. Alternatively, you can switch your current bedding set with another one you currently own.
  • Layer for Comfort: I suggest layering your bedding with a few decorative pillows, an extra quilt and a cozy throw, for added texture and style. Let your personality shine by choosing patterns and colors that bring you joy!
  • Quality over Quantity: When you have less, but better quality items on your bed, you will notice the difference. Having high quality natural materials like cotton, linen, or wool in bedding helps regulate body temperature for a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep.

4. Organize Your Closet and Dresser

  • Simplify Your Wardrobe: We typically wear only about 20% of our clothing regularly, while the remaining 80% goes unused, a phenomenon often referred to as the “80/20 wardrobe rule”. We often accumulate clothes without fully considering our needs and preferences, leading to a wardrobe filled with items we don’t regularly wear. I suggest focusing on building a capsule wardrobe with versatile, quality pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.
  • Embrace a Capsule Wardrobe: Simplifying your closet can take the stress out of getting dressed each day. By choosing fewer, high-quality pieces that fit well, reflect your current style, and mix and match effortlessly, you’ll create a wardrobe that feels fresh, versatile, and easy to maintain. It’s truly a game changer! I love how Christal Sczebel, from “Style Your Occasion” creates seasonal capsule wardrobes.
  • Use Storage Solutions: Once you have decluttered your clothing, I recommend strategically purchasing closet organizers, baskets, space saving hangers and drawer dividers to keep things neat and accessible. Only buy new organization items according to your specific needs!

5. Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

  • Lighting: A variety of lighting in the bedroom is the perfect way to adjust the mood in the room. Soft, adjustable lighting (like a dimmable bedside lamp or string lights) is the perfect way to set a calming mood as you get ready to fall asleep. If you enjoy reading before bed, I suggest purchasing a reading light like this one: Hooga Book Light
  • Aromatherapy: Pay attention to your sense of smell to create a spa-like bedroom retreat. I love using essential oils or candles with calming scents (lavender, chamomile, eucalyptus) to create a sense of relaxation.
  • Nature Elements: Studies show that being around nature—or even viewing nature-inspired elements—can lower stress levels and improve mood. Natural materials, colors and decor can have a soothing effect, often reducing cortisol levels (the stress hormone). Incorporating these elements into the bedroom, such as a wooden bed frame, natural linen sheets, or real plants, can create a space that feels nurturing and peaceful, helping you to unwind and relax after a busy day.

6. Maximize the Functionality of Your Space

  • Create Functional Zones: Our bedroom can serve many purposes. If your bedroom will also function as a workspace or child’s nursery, use a wall or corner to create an intentional space that is well defined.
  • Storage Solutions for Multi-Use Rooms: For shared bedrooms or smaller spaces, I recommend using furniture that doubles as storage to maximize your space (ottomans or a bed with built in drawers are great options).
  • Stay Tidy: A tidy space is a functional and welcoming space. Spending a few minutes before bed to do a “clean sweep” and sort laundry, place kids toys back in their home and put miscellaneous items such as cups or mugs back in the kitchen will create a haven that will be easier to rest and relax in. Bonus tip: get your kids to help!

7. Personalize Your Bedroom

  • Meaningful Decor: Your bedroom is your own personal haven away from a busy and noisy world, so incorporating personal touches, such as photos, artwork, or keepsakes will bring you joy and a deep sense of gratitude for your truly personal oasis.
  • Create a Calm Color Palette: Choosing soft, neutral, or soothing tones for your bedroom can help create a peaceful environment that promotes rest and relaxation. Save the bold, vibrant colors for more energetic spaces in your home—like the family room or dining area.
  • Incorporate Your Personal Style: As you design your bedroom, select furniture, window treatments, and bedding that truly reflect you. Whether your style leans boho, minimalist, or a unique mix of both, let your personality shine through in the details. Your bedroom should feel like a space you love to be in.

8. Maintain Your Refreshed Space

  • Daily Habits: Simple daily habits like making your bed, putting away laundry and doing a clean sweep at the end of the day will keep your bedroom organized long-term. It’s the little daily actions that make the biggest difference in maintaining a home bedroom refresh.
  • Weekly Check-Ins: I recommend a quick weekly refresh to maintain a clean and cozy feel in your bedroom. Dusting, vacuuming and cleaning mirrors and windows each week, will make you feel your best in your bedroom.
  • Avoid the Clutter Trap: Remember to be intentional about what enters your bedroom haven. You worked hard to create a space that is a sanctuary amidst the chaos of daily life. Incorporate daily and weekly habits to stop the build up of unnecessary clutter.

How to make a bedroom more attractive?

Adding greenery (faux or real), textured cushions on your bed, an interesting rug and candles will create an attractive home bedroom retreat. Think about incorporating items that pleases all of your senses. Pro tip: A little bit of dark chocolate in your night table is a must!

How do I make a bedroom serene?

Incorporating at least 3 points of light in your space will allow you to experience a serene mood at any time of day. Open the blinds during the day to allow natural light to stream in and have at least 2 lamps and one overhead light (with a dimmer switch if possible) to create a relaxed mood in the evening or early morning hours. Choosing neutral, light and airy or dark and moody paint on the wall will create a tranquil environment.

How to make your bedroom aesthetic without buying anything?

Making the bed and decluttering your space will instantly make your bedroom feel more attractive and is completely free! A made bed first thing in the morning sets your whole day up for success. Clearing items off of the floor and surfaces and putting them in their proper home immediately improves the look and feel of your bedroom.
