Easy step-by-step guide to have a clutter free bedroom for good!
Our bedrooms are meant to serve as a retreat from the day. Adults and kids alike go to these sacred spaces to escape demands and to do lists, unwind and find true rest for body and soul. In order to rejuvenate in these spaces, we need to be intentional about decluttering and choose to keep only what serves us and invites us to breathe a little deeper and relax.
Follow these 5 easy steps to create a decluttered sanctuary that encourages you to rest and reset.
1. Make Your Bed
One of the simplest ways to make a bedroom feel put together and inviting is to make your bed every morning. Consider layering your bedding by using a neutral bedspread and then add colour, pattern and texture with a cozy throw and a few throw pillows.
- Add this quick task to your morning routine
- Teach your kids how to make their own beds each morning
- Getting into a made bed at the end of the day feels luxurious!
2. Simplify Your Closet
Getting ready in the morning should not be a difficult task. If you edit your items ruthlessly and only keep clothing that fits, that you feel confident in and reach for often, you will be left with a closet that brings you joy every time you walk into it!
- Most of us only wear 30% of the clothes in our closet on a regular basis!
- Choose clothing that fits your body NOW, don’t hang onto a bunch of “when I lose the weight” items because every day you will feel bad that you aren’t there yet!
- Turn your hanger every time you wear an item, re-visit this space in 6 months and consider donating or selling the clothing that you never wear
3. File Fold Clothing in Drawers
Consider keeping your socks, underwear, pyjamas, exercise clothing and t-shirts in drawers. In order to clearly see what you have, fold your clothing and then stand it upright in drawers. If you have open shelving in your closet you can fold jeans, pants and sweaters and stack them.
- When you stack items in closed drawers it is difficult to see what you actually have
- File fold and stand clothing upright to make choosing what to wear simple and quick
- Sort items by type in each dresser drawer
4. Use a Basket to Contain Throws + Pillows
Having a basket next to your bed is a great way to contain extra pillows and throws that you keep on your bed during the day. It is also a great way to add style and texture to your bedroom.
- Find a basket that suits your style and makes a statement
- Place the basket next to your bed
- Use a basket to collect dirty laundry rather than throwing it on the floor
5. Add Items that Encourage You to Rest and Unwind
Think about all of your senses and add items that speak to each of them. Create a little oasis that includes some of your favourite things to make your bedroom feel like a little getaway!
- SMELL: add a favourite candle or diffuser to the room
- VISION: add photos or quotes that bring you joy
- HEARING: add a small speaker to play your favourite tunes
- TASTE: add a few chocolates or mints to your bedside table
- TOUCH: add a cozy throw on your bed

SPECIFIC TIPS FOR A CHILD’S BEDROOM:
Most of the tips in this post can also be used in a child’s bedroom; particularly teaching your child how to make their bed each morning, regularly simplify and edit their clothing and file fold items in drawers. But, here are a few more child-specific tips to keep the bedroom decluttered:
- Provide your child with a “keepsake box” that they can keep under the bed or in their closet to contain those small beloved trinkets and extra special items.
- Use bins and baskets to sort toys and keep them contained: if everything has a place it will stay organized
- Designate one basket or bin for stuffed animals to live
- Place 1 laundry basket in the hallway for dirty laundry so clothes stay off the floor
- Use “picture ledges” to display favourite books and encourage reading
I hope these 5 simple tips will give you the confidence to banish clutter and create a relaxing and inviting bedroom for you and your kids to enjoy!
