A closet can become a catch all for everything! In other words, it can become a disorganized mess in no time at all. Keep reading for some simple suggestions to create a place for everything and keep everything in its place; changing that dreaded closet to one that is functional and organized!
My 5 year old daughter has a habit of throwing her clothes on the floor. She also has a daily quiet time in her room and so often times toys end up in a mess in her closet. Here is a before pic:
With a few additions and simple changes this closet went from a disaster to organized in less than an hour!
Here’s how I transformed this little space in no time at all:
1.Buy a cute hamper for dirty clothes
I picked up the cute little fox hamper from our local Superstore and presto… dirty clothes are out of site and a cute little animal is smiling at me every time I open the door. Much better!
2. Donate, sell or store clothes that your child has outgrown
We have 2 girls so when Ava has outgrown her clothing I check to make sure it is stain and rip free and then store it in a labelled plastic tote in our basement for Claire. It is always fun to pull out clothes for Claire that Ava used to love and it’s also a big money saver. If you do not need to keep clothes for a younger child, consider donating them to a friend or someone in need or selling them on your local buy and sell site and make some of your money back! As seasons change (hello, Spring!) make sure you clear out the winter clothing (good bye Christmas dresses!) and check on sizes every 3 months… children grow out of their clothes so quickly!
3. Hang clothing in categories
This may sound a bit tedious, but trust me, don’t skip this step! Tank tops, short sleeved shirts, long sleeved shirts, tunics, sweaters and dresses… all grouped together makes getting ready and choosing clothes in the morning a breeze! (Side note – we keep Ava’s undies, socks, pants and Pj’s in her dresser.)
4. Use a hanging organizer
My favourite choice is this IKEA SKUBB organizer with 9 compartments:
It is the perfect spot for Ava’s dance clothes, tutu’s, skirts and hats. T-shirts, shoes, athletic wear, or even rolled up sheets and pillow cases would work well in this organizer.
5. Store bedding on the top shelf of the closet
If you have an extra set of bedding for your child consider storing it in your their closet. That way it’s ready to grab if you need to do a quick change of bedding or if you already have a full linen closet.
6. Add bins for toy storage
We picked up these colourful bins for a great deal at Costco. They are the perfect size to store Ava’s Lego Friends sets, Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony figurines as well as art supplies. We added this little book shelf for extra storage. It stores toys and some t-shirts and sweatshirts as well.
So there you have it! I hope you find these simple steps practical and useful. Now go and tackle that closet you’ve been dreading… you can do it!!
