This June, my sister, Kim celebrated her 40th birthday. Let’s just say, she wasn’t feeling “overly excited” about this transition, so I knew just what to do to lift her spirits … deliver the very best top secret birthday surprise: a farm porch refresh!

Time was tight to pull off this project so I convinced my talented designer friend, Angela, over at Urban Habitat to work together with me so we could pull together this refresh in time and make sure it was completely tailored to Kim’s tastes. Angela is both an elemental and interior designer who listened to all of my porch dreams and directed my attention to just the right pieces to anchor the design and I know that this project wouldn’t have been the same without her! I dreamed of having Kim’s family & business name, The Red Barn Loft, on a large sign by their door & Angela made this dream into a reality for me. The custom sign in this project is the piece that adds the most character and personal meaning to the space and it was the first thing that Kim noticed when we revealed her updated porch!

Because pictures speak 1000 words, I’m going to walk you through this refresh with lots of visuals. Enjoy!

BEFORE:

The porch had good bones, with nice maintenance free decking and beautiful crisp white siding on the house, but it was in need of warmth and character to transform it into a place where my sister and her family would love spending their time.

PLANNING STAGES:

First things first, I got to work creating a Mood Board to cast vision for the space! A mood board is great for pulling together all of the pieces that you aim to incorporate and gives you a glimpse into the finished product!

MAKING IT HAPPEN:

I contacted & recruited family members as well as Angela, from Urban Habitat to make this porch refresh happen! We were on a tight schedule and had to be sure to keep everything top secret! Angela and I must have exchanged 1000 texts about the custom sign she was making as well as which pillows would work better for the chairs and then … it all came together! My mom found an amazing faux fir plant at a garage sale for $2 and my handy hubby and dad were able to get the hanging lights hung just in the knick of time. I mainly shopped at IKEA, Homesense & Jysk to stay on budget, and as I usually do in my projects, I pulled in items that Kim already had on hand to bring the final pieces of the project together.

THE REVEAL:

It was a beautiful sunny Spring day in June when we gathered at the farm to create the porch of my sister’s dreams! We only had a few hours to pull it all together and managed to finish everything within minutes of her arriving at the farm. Here are some pics of Kim’s beautiful farm porch refresh:
