Any Hungry Caterpillar fans out there?

We just celebrated Claire’s 2nd birthday today, caterpillar style!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a book that has been one of my favourites since I was a young girl.  It follows the journey of a teeny tiny caterpillar who spends his first week of life eating his way through a variety of foods until he becomes a rather LARGE caterpillar and then of course transforms into a beautiful butterfly.

It is the perfect book to create a birthday party around!

I found these adorable FREE printables to label the food over at an amazing blog called polka dots and puppies.

As you can see, I substituted blueberries for plums as the grocery store didn’t have any – it’s off season for plums I guess!

This year we decided to host Claire’s birthday party at a local play place, called Magic Space.  It is only a few minutes from home and was very reasonably priced.  We went with the Basic package as it was most affordable. The owners treated us like gold.  We had use of our private room longer than expected and even though the kids at our party ranged from 1 to 11 years old, everyone (even the adults!) enjoyed running around in the play gym.

I was able to take items from home to decorate the table and used some of my crafting materials to frame the free food labels (see above).  We had a Very Hungry Caterpillar stuffed animal and the book to bring along from home as well.  I spent a grand total of $10 on water bottle labels and favour bag toppers from a great little shop on Etsy here.  She was able to personalize the labels with Claire’s name on them and they turned out great!

Once again, Grandma came to the rescue and created the most adorable cupcakes to go along with our caterpillar theme. Oma also brought the delicious platters of meat and cheese to go along with the story.

Claire had her very own special cupcake with an edible caterpillar on top.

For one of my entertainment zones, (you can read more about what that is, here) I printed off some free colouring sheets and made up a Very Hungry Caterpillar memory game just in case any of the kiddos needed a break.

But, everyone was having too much fun to sit for long!  Ava’s face says it all!

As the children left, they grabbed a party favour, which was a package of Real Fruit Gummies, and I had them sitting in a cute picnic basket.

All in all, we had a perfect day celebrating our sweet Claire surrounded by family and friends.  I just can’t believe she’s 2!
